Affirmations for Confidence & Courage
As mindfulness exercises, tools and habits become more ingrained into Western culture, affirmations for confidence and courage are showing up in morning routines as a way to boost positive energy. The wealthy have endorsed their effectiveness and science backs them up! Inviting affirmations into your subconscious programming rituals is a quick task with a big payoff. In this post, we’ll explore what affirmations are, how they work and give you some examples of how they can be used to grow confidence and courage. Let the solar plexus healing begin!
What are Affirmations?
Affirmations are short, positive statements recited in the first person. The beauty of this practice is the affirmations do not necessarily have to be true to you. They simply need to be powerful and direct enough for you to emotionally connect with the sentiment. When repeated often enough, affirmations can help you overcome negative thought patterns. If you are working towards healing specific subconscious beliefs, you can create affirmations to target those specific areas. If you are working towards self-love, a few examples of affirmations that may help are:
I am worthy of loving myself
I am a beautiful human, inside and out
I love my kind heart
I love my creative ideas
It is an honor and privilege to be me
These affirmations highlight things you love about yourself and reaffirm your worthiness of feeling that love. Beginning your day with this reminder will begin to have an effect on how you carry yourself, how you think, and how you interact with others. Eventually, your affirmation will pop into mind immediately after a negative thought about yourself. This is how you’ll know it’s starting to work!
What Makes Affirmations Work?
Affirmations, when used at the right time of day in the most effective manner, can help reprogram your subconscious mind. Once your subconscious mind has learned a belief or behavior, you begin to display that belief or behavior outwardly without second thought. The first 20 minutes after you wake up and the last 20 minutes before you go to sleep are when your mind is most susceptible to absorbing information. This is why saying affirmations in the mirror each morning and evening is the most effective way to integrate them into your life. Looking yourself in the eye while reciting positive statements allows you the opportunity to recall the memory later on, when negative thoughts creep in.
If your subconscious mind believes your ideas are unworthy of expression, you will have trouble sharing your thoughts with others. Conversely, if you have a strong belief that you are a talented speaker with value to share, you are more likely to give an enthusiastic “yes!” when invited to speak in public.
Let’s say you are working towards health and fitness goals, but you are currently not living an active lifestyle or making mindful meal choices. In order for your lifestyle change to truly stick, your mindset has to change. Adding a few of the following affirmations to your morning and evening routine will help to combat some of the thoughts you may have around this change:
I am physically active everyday
I love to see and feel the effects of eating healthy foods every day
I find healthy recipes I love with ease
I love the way I feel after I workout everyday
I make healthy choices for my body and mind
How Can Affirmations Build Confidence & Courage?
You can use affirmations to build confidence and courage in the same ways we have discussed self-love and health. A lack of confidence can present itself in many ways — extreme shyness, anxiety when confronting new opportunities, self-deprecating jokes and thoughts or comparing yourself to others. Confidence feeds courage; therefore, working on the former will allow the latter to flourish within.
It is important to first explore how your lack of confidence is presenting, so you can create affirmations speaking directly to those subconscious blocks. You can do so through daily meditation focused specifically on the question “How does my lack of confidence effect me?” Once you receive the answers, your daily meditations can shift into focusing on visualizing your most confident self. How do they speak, walk, interact with others or accept opportunities? What kind of life do you attract with your new level of self-confidence and courage? Be as detailed in your visualizations as you can. After 30 days of consistent meditation on a specific area, you will see the results both internally and in your external world.
